Patrons at Coastal Flats in Fairfax may look like they’re on vacation already. The atmosphere of this casual eatery is like a permanent vacation, with an exterior design that hearkens back to classic Atlantic beach houses and an equally mellow vibe inside. But it’s the food here that really draws locals back time and time again. Since opening, Coastal Flats has racked up numerous awards from the press. Start your meal with the excellent blue crab and rock shrimp fritters, which come with a sweet grilled corn salsa and decadent lobster butter. For entrees, regulars rave about the pecan crusted trout, which is paired with a citrus sauce that is tangy and offsets the nutty, earthy coating on the fish. Also delicious is the Hong Kong style sea bass, which comes in a soy sherry broth flavored with sesame, ginger and scallions. Portion sizes are generous and prices are very fair, but some complain that the seating can feel a little cramped.
Still, it beats hauling everything to the beach. Don't miss it, Regent’s Park!
